Deciding on a which jar may be as simple as just getting something you like or within your budget.
However, you may be looking for a theme for a special occasion. Most jars are a simple practical design that can be made to look either modern or traditional depending on how you dress them up.
A simple round jar dressed up with labels and lid covers can look fantastic or you can start with something a bit different like a hexagonal one.
Try to visualize what your jar will look like when filled with jam. Also, think about the practical things like size requirements or family size etc
The Hexagonal Jam Jar for Special Gifts
I love these hexagonal jars. I use the hexagonal jam jars as they are a bit different and immediately stand out. I think they make great gifts for all preserves. Also, I know it sounds daft, but it makes you feel as though your jam is special when you are eating it.
These come in various, jar and pack sizes and are suitable as Christmas gift extras or as part of a basket or even as wedding favours.
Nutley's 8oz Hexagonal Jam Jar with a Screw-Top Lid - Gold
I have the smaller ones which for my own use means they don’t last very long.
For gifts, a lovely label and pretty cap will really make them shine. Perhaps a ribbon?
Quality Kilner Jars for Jam and Jellies
These are the proper jam sized jars. I admit I have the larger preserving jars. I prefer the shape of these smaller ones.
Kilner is a well known and quality brand when it comes to jam making and preserves in general. They are a bit more expensive than other jars but they are well made.
Genuine Kilner Screw-Top Jam Jars at 250ml/8.8 fl oz
What I love about these jars is the PoP! It scared me half to death the first time it happened. About 10-15 minutes or so after you finish your jam making and are resting with a cup of tea there is an almighty loud sucking pop! There can be no doubt that you now have a sealed jar.
The lids come in two parts which at first I thought was a bit odd. But you can buy more of the central parts rather than replace the whole thing.
Of course, you are not meant to reuse the center part as the effectiveness and hygiene are compromised.
Small 8oz Simple Round Jars
These small round jars are great value for money. When labeled and with a lid cover they will look very traditional. My sister buys tons of these and uses them for Christmas presents with the most amazing jams and jellies. I have a few of them though I tend towards the slightly larger jars.
Unusual Jam Jars
Some people prefer to use unusual jars for jam making to make things look a little different.
Jar Seals
I admit I do reuse after washing and sterilizing, but really any lids are not meant to be reused regardless of the jar. If reusing then wax discs should be used.
