What Do You Get in a Jam Making Starter Kit?

The Jam Making Starter Kit Equipment You need Included

jam making starter kitBuying a jam making kit can save you time and money as it can include most if not all of the equipment needed to make jams or other preserves.

Although, deciding on which kit can be difficult when starting out as many of the kits offer different contents.

If you don’t know what you need you may end up buying things you don’t need or leaving out things that you do.

If you want a more detailed rundown of the individual equipment or additional things needed for jam making please see my full equipment list where it is explained in full.

The kit below is a good starting point for basic jam making needs.

The Maslin Pan Jam Preserving Starter Set

VonShef 9L Maslin Pan Jam Preserving Starter Set

This is a great value jam making starter kit as it provides you with all the essential jam making equipment that you need for making jam or chutneys rather than having to source them all individually.   The only extras you need are the ingredients.

I guess at a push some people will also want some tongs to lift the jars.

The contents include the following:

A 9L Maslin (preserving)  Pan with Measurements

A maslin pan is a particular must as saucepans are not really deep enough, as a rule, to cook the jam without it spitting everywhere or sticking.  After a couple of seasons of being scolded or having to use a saucepan lid as a shield I got a huge pan (I mean HUGE!).  You don’t need to go quite that mad, this pan or similar size is fine.

Also, the pan has measurements on the inside in both imperial and metric which is handy. It also has a top and side handle which help with lifting with ease.  It also has a spout to help with pouring.

A Jam Funnel for Easy Pouring

You really need these as unless you have a steady hand you can easily get hot sticky jam everywhere and all down the sides of your jars.  I managed without a jam funnel for a while but in the end decided it would be worth the investment to make things easier.

Glass Jars for Preserving Jam, onions chutneys etc.

They provide you with 6 450ml in sized jars.  This is a good start. However, you will probably find that you will want more jars than this.  Check the lid sizes of any additional jars so that you know you can fit your funnel.

Fancy Lids and Labels

This is a nice touch.  While fancy lids and labels are not necessary,  they do make the jams feel special and finish it off.  Also, if you are entering in shows you will want this added extra.

A wooden Spoon

If you haven’t got one you will need one as metal doesn’t work as well.  Also, this spoon has a flat end with you need to get into the edges of your pan.

A Thermometer for setting Points

A Thermometer will save you time and energy and help get the setting of your jams right so well worth getting.

In Conclusion

VonShef 9L Maslin Pan Jam Preserving Starter Set

The VonShef Maslin Pan Jam and Preserving Starter Set Bundle

This is a great jam making kit for the money.  It is cheaper than buying things separately.  At the time of writing the cost separately would be covered with the maslin pan and the funnel alone. Well worth it.  It would make a great gift for a beginner or seasoned jam maker.  That there is a two-year warranty gives you piece of mind and is an added bonus. You can get these online or individual items locally if you can find a shop that will do them.

I find often it is just easier to get things online as often the local shops do not do specialist equipment.  You might get a plastic funnel but that is it.

My sister is lucky she has a Lakeland but they are a bit on the pricey side.  I do have a Wilkos – yay.  They are great for jars and have a basic range but they stock seasonally so sometimes you are lucky and others not so much.
