How to Make Cranberry Sauce From Fresh Cranberries
This recipe makes a simple cranberry sauce with or without spices.
Fruit: Cranberries
Pectin Levels: Very High
Preparation Time: 5 mins
Cooking Time: 15 minutes
Ingredients:
200g (7 oz) sugar (any but caster sugar dissolves faster)
250ml (8 fl oz) of water
350g (12 oz) of fresh cranberries
Optional Extra for Added Warmth and Spice:
1/2 Teaspoon of Ground Cinnamon or All Spices
Method to Make Your Sauce:
- Wash and de-stalk the cranberries. If you are using your own Cranberries remove any garden debris and poor quality or damaged cranberries or ones with holes.
- Put the sugar and the water into a medium saucepan to heat up. Bring the mixture to the boil to dissolve all of the sugar.
- Now you can add all of the cranberries.
- Bring your cranberries to the boil then reduce your heat and cook them for about 10 minutes. You want them to burst open.
- Now if you are using cinnamon or all spices you can add them and stir them in.
- Check that you like the taste, if not increase the quantity of your spices/cinnamon to your mix.
- When you are happy with the taste remove your sauce from the heat and let it cool down completely.
- Now your cranberry sauce is ready to put into your storage container and move to the fridge or to serve with your turkey or other meat.
How Long Does Homemade Cranberry Sauce Last?
When you make your own homemade cranberry sauce it only lasts between 1-2 weeks depending on how well you store it. It must be kept in an airtight container, either plastic or glass and then stored in your fridge.
Can I use Frozen Cranberries to Make this Sauce?
Yes, you can replace the fresh cranberries with frozen ones if you cannot get hold of fresh ones or you have already frozen the ones you have grown. Just use the same amount of cranberries but only cook them for about 6 minutes.
If you have grown your own the cranberries should last in the fridge for weeks anyway so you can just use them when you need them.
